Batrick’s Spy Kit: Knuckle

Batrick’s Spy Kit: Knuckle
This is the first Batrick’s Spy Kit album, recorded in 2004. This album, along with it’s two counterparts (Magitek’s Totally Baked Album by Magitekno and Vol. II: Stoned Age by VARN Industries), was a report on the Extended Marijuana Study held by MAN3, Magitek and Batrick with Hippie and MyKaos over the course of 2002.

“Here is how it all started… It was the summer after 7th grade and I had been at the pool all day. My brother Magitek showed up and told me, “I just bought $15 worth of weed.” Well, I had never smoked before and Magitek hadn’t either, so we got a black from the lifeguard and tried to roll a blunt and it barely smoked. Now, remember Magitek had just bought Jamaican fire so we were feeling good. It started to rain so we chilled at the pool and smoked a black until it stopped. After that we headed up to Hippie’s. We smoked 2 bowls out of the Spider Man. When we left we were so baked that we gave Hippie the rest of the Mary J Wana. Later on that day, my brother MAN3 went over to Hippie’s and smoked the rest, and that Jamaican fire was some good shit mon.”
-Batrick

“This was made when he was only fifteen years old. The second track was actually recorded on his fifteenth birthday and since these songs are in chronological order, that means that “Down Hope Up Dope” was actually recorded when he was fourteen. “A Spliff, A Jay And Two Bowls” is based on a true story that was happening while it was being recorded. “Nutmeg” was recorded after Batrick read that you can get high on nutmeg and tried to do it. Magitek co-wrote “The Jesus Jay” after he and Batrick smoked a Bible paper joint. I co-wrote “Gummy Bear,” which was named after a piercing he had at the time, and “Freddy 3.0,” which we made just after he watched Nightmare On Elm Street III for the first time. I also did some extra drum programming on “Elven Lust.” “Bored As Fuck” and “Anti-Bud” were recorded one day when the reefer temporarily ran out.”

VARN Industries: Songs Of HPVAC

VARN Industries: Songs Of HPVAC
This is the fourth VARN Industries album, recorded in 2002.

“This is the third and final follow-up EP to Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack. While different in style to everything before, it is also different to everything that follows it, because I then started smoking the reefer. This is what VARN Industries may have become otherwise, taking the earlier Orwellian themes to a cyber-punk way of thought. What if George Orwell had written 1984 today? Brian P. was a nerdy pain in the ass I knew in high school that sucked up to our computer teacher, who’s last name was Harvey and Fortres was the security system the school used. Hippie makes his first recorded appearance on his and Batrick’s remix of the title track.”

Meet Beacon Meadows… Hippie

Hippie is a producer, composer, illustrator, author and psychonaut based in West Palm Beach, Florida. Between 2001 and 2006, he and MAN3 co-wrote The Hippie Archives, a report on the drug studies of a now defunct branch of Beacon Meadows branch known as the Psychoactive Research Department. He is a member of Kamikaze Moth (with Anthony and MAN3). He has been involved with Beacon Meadows since 2001.

VARN Industries: As Seen On TV
This is the third VARN Industries album, recorded in 2001. “In The Flesh” was originally performed by Pink Floyd.

“This is the second follow-up EP to Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack. Like “The Proles,” “As Seen On TV” was co-written by my brother Batrick, who contributed the first of many Batrick’s Spy Kit remixes. Magitek contributed a remix as well, and I did two remixes of “As Seen On TV,” a shortened version and an extended version, and a Resident Evil inspired “GigaHurtz” remix.”

VARN Industries: The Proles

VARN Industries: The Proles
This is the second VARN Industries album, recorded in 2001.

“This is the first follow-up EP to Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack. “The Proles” was one of two tracks off Vol. I that was co-written by my brother Batrick. My brother Magitek makes his first recorded appearance with his remix of “The Proles,” along with two remixes I did. “Cast Silver” and “Shark’s Pet On A Leash” could both technically be considered Batrick’s Spy Kit covers, because Batrick and I had recorded earlier versions in 1999 using a karaoke machine and Sony Playstation and then edited them using Sound Recorder on a Windows 95 computer for a very early BSK demo cassette called Lawnboy: Welcome To Here.”

VARN Industries Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack

VARN Industries Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack
This is the first VARN Industries album, recorded between 1999 and 2001, with vocals later finally recorded in 2004.

“The concept behind this album was that it was the soundtrack to the novel 1984, written by George Orwell, though it ended up drawing inspiration from much more than just that single book. The lyrics were written in 1999 during a year-long binge on any anti-utopian literature (such as Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, etc…), as well as literature about the Vietnam War, the Soviet Union and the first Gulf War (the second one hadn’t happened yet). The music was then recorded when I found a music-making program in my video productions class that I took home. Batrick made his first recorded appearance on this album, helping me with the music on a couple tracks. My long-time friend Joseph Haun co-wrote the lyrics for “An Anthem By Citizen 303” (his locker was #606) while we were in history class, where we first learned about the Frank Loesser song “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition.” I actually decided to cover the song based purely on its title, having never heard the song or read its lyrics. The backing track is a overhauled version of the theme song for a show I did in high school called “The Ron & Rob Show.” Several other tracks also began as background music for high school video projects. An answering machine message from my mother is backmasked into the second track. I had a very different idea of how VARN Industries would evolve from what it ended up becoming, thanks in no small part to my introduction to marijuana after most of this album was done. ”

Big Brother 4 President: A Bowl Of Worms

Big Brother 4 President: A Bowl Of Worms
This is a pre-Beacon Meadows demo recorded in 2000.

“After changing the name of the band from Big Brother 4 President to Digital Drone, then kicking everyone out, making it a solo project and renaming it back to Big Brother 4 President, I finally recorded a collection of demos that eventually were lost and re-recorded as VARN Industries first album, Volume I: 1984 Soundtrack. This album, however, was recorded entirely using the same computer as the Lawnboy album, Windows 95 using Sound Recorder and Cool Edit Pro 95.”

Lawnboy: Welcome To Here

Lawnboy: Welcome To Here
This is a pre-Beacon Meadows demo released on cassette tape by Lawnboy in 1999.

“Welcome To Here was recorded in the late 90s using an original PlayStation and a karaoke machine, then transferred from tape to a Windows 95 computer and edited with Cool Edit Pro 95 and then finally copied back to tape using a Sony Walkman with a mic input. At the time of this recording, Batrick was ten or eleven and I was fifteen or sixteen. Both “Shark’s Pet On A Leash” and “Cast Silver” were rerecorded for the 2001 VARN Industries album “The Proles”. The song listed as “Silicon Bliss” was rerecorded for the 2001 VARN Industries album “Songs Of HPVAC” under the title “A Meeting With King SysAdmin”, as well as in remixed form (courtesy of Batrick and Hippie) as “A Meeting With King SysAdmin (TV Baseball With Computer Monitor Remix)”. The fourth track, “Interview With The Umpire”, was actually sampled in its entirety and used as the intro for the 2001 version of “Shark’s Pet On A Leash”. “Interview With The Umpire” is a play on the title of the movie “Interview With The Vampire” and a reference to Batrick playing little league baseball at the time. Batrick wrote all the lyrics, except “Silicon Bliss”, which I wrote, in a composition notebook he and I used at the time to collect our poetry and lyrics. The album artwork, which was printed, cut and folded one at a time, was made in Paint using the font and an image from the Blizzard game Diablo. The title of the first track comes from a Bugs Bunny quote in the Merrie Melodies short “Transylvania 6-5000″. However, we saw it growing up in an edited form in the Quackbusters movie.”

Meet Beacon Meadows… Batrick

Batrick is an untitledbatronica producer, props master and illustrator based in Tampa, Florida. He releases his solo material as Batrick’s Spy Kit. He is a member of Lawnboy (with MAN3) and Big Ass High Trees (with Jacque, MAN3 and Robert Oh). His brothers are MAN3, Magitek and Rorschacht Mitchell, his sister is Jennifer Miecz and his father is Captain Skyhook.

Meet Beacon Meadows… MAN3

Like the devil, I am known by many names. Reverend Michael A. Nalley, MAN3, Evil Jesus and Robby Tussin are but a few. It all depends on the circumstances in which we first meet. I was born at 4:20 (AST) on John Lennon’s birthday in Tampa, Florida, where I have an amazing family that I am very proud of. I have three brothers (Magitek, Batrick and Rorschacht Mitchell) and a sister (Jennifer Miecz). I am lucky enough to have the coolest parents in the world, who have the coolest parents in the world. I’m proudest of all though, of my daughter Lilith, the coolest fucking kid ever. I started recording my own music in 2000-2001 under the name VARN Industries, which I continue to do today. As such, each VARN Industries release is another peak into my life, my mind and my feelings at the time it was recorded. I’m also involved in several collaborative projects with many other Beacon Meadows members. I’m very interested in anti-utopian literature, psychedelics and mind expansion, religion (and the typical hypocrisy of it), astronomy, shipwrecks, sharks, old-school 2D video games (especially the early Super Mario and Legend Of Zelda series, Final Fantasy VI, Burger Time, Asteroids, Space Invaders, etc.), zombies (whether they are in movies, comics or video games) and science fiction (especially Star Trek).

MAN3 is an electrodada producer, circuit bender, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist based in Tampa, Florida. He releases his solo material as VARN Industries and is also a member of several collaborative projects: Lawnboy (with Batrick), Underground Pipe Labyrinth (with Skunky), Ghost Town Breeding Ground (with Tvitkh), Kaptain Kensington & The Fungus Forest (with Xaos Beast), Embryo Concepts (with Vagabondage), The Electric Mainline Players (with Jake Newton), Noble Salvage (with Francis Co and Robert Oh), MDM (with Robert Oh and J. Matthew Snell), Dr. Robert MD (with Robert Oh), Big Ass High Trees (with Batrick, Jacque and Robert Oh), MDFM Hospital Radio (with …Hi, Robert Oh and Faiyaz Shah), Letitia On Rocks (with Botchbud, …Hi, Robert Oh and Faiyaz Shah), Faiyaz And MAN3 (with Faiyaz Shah), Hydra-Phonics (with Robert Oh and Skunky) and Kamikaze Moth (with Anthony and Hippie).
